Weekly Memo May 12th
“Why are you staring at the sky?” asked the two men who appeared next to the disciples of Jesus at the ascension. It’s a parallel to the question asked at the empty tomb. Both serve to remind us that Jesus is risen and alive; he’s found in the Word and in his followers. Often young people look for Truth and meaning in the wrong places: in the media, in possessions, and in easy popularity. They come to us hungry for what is real, true and satisfying.
In the same story, scripture also notes that Jesus instructed the disciples right up to the moment that he ascended to heaven. As teachers called by God, we are to treasure every opportunity to instruct the students entrusted to our care. The message we convey is literally their salvation… and ours.
In our finals days of the school year, it is tempting to coast. Let us beg God to help us embrace our vocation. Ask for the strength to make every final moment count. Let us imitate Saint Lasalle as we honor his feast day this week.

MEN OF IRON/MEN OF GOLD
Weekly Memo for May 5th
Delasalle Day has been my favorite day of the school year since I enjoyed my first one as a student in 1977. What impressed me then and still does is that it is a clear expression of our community. Everyone could enjoy the day as they pleased: competing in sports, lounging under a tree or grilling up a storm. Groups competed fiercely but came together as a school to simply enjoy one another. Faculty and students laughed together in the mellowness of the day. It is truly a blessed memory.
This Thursday the people of God celebrate the ascension of the risen Christ to heaven. The disciples were instructed to be witnesses. Scripture records that they were moved to proclaim and act in Jesus’ name. As we begin to wrap up the year, we might reflect on what our students have witnessed. Have they had an experience of being accepted and welcomed? Have they had seen the joy of being Christian in us? Has our school culture reinforced good choices? Are they better men of faith for belonging to our community?
Let us lift our students in prayers as they prepare to leave as graduates or simply for the summer. Let us pray that what they have witnessed here provides them with strength and inspiration for their time away. May we teachers take the precious time we have left to speak about what is real, true, right and important.
PRAYERS REQUESTED:
For the needs of our new bishop;
For those in need of healing; especially for the father of Jim Loweree ’75; Alan Romero ’16; Mrs. Beniquez; Mrs. Lucero and Dan Haggerty ‘67;
Those seeking gainful employment;
For seniors during their final exams;
For those alumni who will soon be fathers and for the health of their family;
For our students receiving the sacrament of Confirmation;
For the track team as it travels to the state finals;
For God’s blessings on our development efforts;
In thanksgiving for Cathedral’s alumni, family, and friends.

MEN OF IRON/MEN OF GOLD
Weekly Memo for April 28th
“Let me tell you something: We are going to change your life.” With these powerful parting words, Chief Justice Barajas walked away from a stunned eighth grader and his very happy parents this past Saturday. His comments were a pithy abbreviation of a Lasallian education: simply life changing.
Coming to Cathedral and walking into your classroom should change each student’s life. The hallmarks of this Lasallian schools are faith and zeal. Each student should come away feeling that they matter. They’ll get feedback whether they act up or succeed. They encounter daily seven passionate educators and staff who love them… because God loves them. Teachers who pray, model, and connect reflect Christ the Teacher.
This week we celebrate our heritage in Delasalle. He was a man who loved God so much that it changed his life and he began schools that did the same. Let us thank God for our noble vocations and for the opportunity to be transformed.
PRAYERS REQUESTED:
For the repose of the soul of Anne Covey, sister of Paul Covey ’84, and the consolation of their families;
For the repose of the soul of JR Provincio ’43 and the consolation of his families;
For the repose of the soul of the daughter of Piti Barron ’55 and the consolation of their family;
For those in need of healing; especially for the father of Mr. White; Alan Romero ’16; Mrs. Beniquez; Dan Haggerty ’67; and Carlos Loweree (father of Jaime Loweree ’75);
For seniors as they sprint to the finish line;
For our baseball and track teams as they travel;
For God’s blessings on our admissions and development events;
In thanksgiving for our alumni, families, and friends.

Belated thanks to the freshman class for setting a new standard of generosity and research with this year’s Heifer Project. This annual project has evolved to amazing levels. Thank you to this impressive group of young men and to Mrs. West.
Belated thanks to Mrs. Moreno and the French Honor Society for the wonderful French Mass two weeks ago. We had a record number of Loretto Academy French students in attendance. Our students did a very nice job of hosting our guests at the reception which followed.
The Annual Meet – Eat – Greet was an impressive community building event with ample opportunities for incoming students and their families to continue to feel welcomed and valued. Hats go off to the master organizer, Mr. Flores, whose events continue to evolve and improve. We’re very grateful for the generous faculty, staff, and students who spent four hours setting up for and taking down the event. Everything from the smell of delicious food to the many warm smiles to the soothing orchestral sounds made the afternoon a powerful success. Mr. Cancellare is especially grateful for the welcome extended to new families.
The assembly with Congressman O’Rourke was simple but very powerful. His remarks recognizing the efforts of our faculty and students were inspirational and stirring.
- We were most honored to have the congressman address Cathedral’s recent accomplishments with a one minute address on the floor of the House of Representatives.
Thank you to Mrs. Lujan for planning the Spring Academic Assembly to honor student achievement in the second semester. MEN OF IRON/MEN OF GOLD
Weekly Memo April 21st
A bystander at the Boston Marathon rushed into the chaos to help the wounded despite being ordered to evacuate the area. She is purported to have later said, “I was in the wrong place at the wrong time but I chose to do the right thing.” For those in shock and pain, she was the presence of God.
In his final hours with his disciples, Jesus instructed them that “Greater love has no one than this: that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Few of us will find ourselves in the middle of a terrorist attack but all of us have influence on one another. Parents sacrifice endlessly for their children. Friends place their needs last to help another. Teachers dedicate themselves to the formation of their students. The situation which calls for us to die to ourselves is never of our choosing.
Let us thank God for those in our lives who challenged us with God’s truth so that we got back on the right path. Let us rededicate ourselves to being God’s presence in the world through our actions this week.
PRAYERS REQUESTED:
In thanksgiving for the community of Cathedral;
For the people of the Boston and West Texas;
For students completing the sacrament of Confirmation at this time of year;
For families in mourning;
For our seniors as they wrap up their year;
For our sophomores as they go on retreat;
For those in need of healing; especially Alan Romero ’16; Mrs. Beniquez; and Dan Haggerty ’67;
For God’s blessings on our admissions and development efforts.
KUDOS and THANKS:

- We’re grateful to our wonderful race sponsors for their financial support.
- The Romero family brought the much anticipated homemade menudo and Mrs. Mendoza was on hand to make the legendary donuts that fed a generation of alumni. We’re indebted to the Romero clan for their boundless backing.
- This year’s race was dedicated to the memory of Benjamin Sanchez, our beloved custodian. We were blessed to have many members of his family with us.
- Thank you goes out to the homeroom teachers who marshaled the students into getting registrations for the race.
Congratulations to the record number of six Gates Scholars, their families, and their teachers. Thank you to Professor Villescas for helping to tabulate the before and after polls which can be found on the school’s website.
This year’s Senior Banquet was an elegant affair thanks to the efforts of Judge Veronica Najera and her team of volunteers. Everything from the opening bagpipe troupe to the thoughtful gift of the Book of Psalms reflected her great effort to make this a memorable experience for parents and seniors.

- We’re very grateful to Mrs. Martinez for all her guidance and assistance with this important event.
We’re so grateful to the PTSAA for hosting a delicious Faculty Appreciation Luncheon last week. Volunteer mothers helped to serve up a wonderful meal catered by Super Chef. Teachers and staff received well-deserved gift certificates and jars of homemade salsa.

Thanks to the superhuman efforts of Mrs. Murillo-Estrada, Brother Mariano, Mr. Estrada, Mr. Saucedo, and amazing young alumni speakers/organizers, the Class of 2013 was blessed with wonderful spiritual experience this weekend. - We’re also grateful for the faculty who assisted with overseeing the seniors at various work sites on Friday afternoon.
- Thank you to our friends at Food City and other sponsors who helped with donations of food.
Thank you to the Spanish Honor Society and Ms. Garibay for providing four volunteer student judges to Most Holy Trinity for their speech tournament.

HE IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!
MEN OF IRON/MEN OF GOLD
Weekly Memo April 14th
There are many lessons to be found in the gospel story of disciples fishing all night long and catching nothing. They encounter the risen Jesus who instructs them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. When they do, they have so great a catch that their nets almost burst!
It’s important to note that they discover Jesus while working although they don’t recognize him initially. It’s in the tiresome daily grind of life that God reaches out to us; even if we aren’t looking for Him. Like the disciples, we’re tired and ready to give up on certain students. After all, we’ve tried time after time and come up with nothing to show for it. Could God be asking us to have faith and try again – the way God does with us? Could God be asking us to tweak what we do so that we might get a difference result?
Despite our weariness, let us cast our nets one more time. Let us risk trying things in a new way in order to reach others. Let us have faith so that we’re overwhelmed by God’s gift to us.

MEN OF IRON/MEN OF GOLD
Weekly Memo for April 7th
The tragedy of Good Friday gave way to triumphal transformation. Frightened disciples began to venture out of their locked rooms into the Temple area and the drastic change in them attracted the crowds. In fact, they would lay their sick in the path of the disciples so that their shadows might fall upon them to heal the sick.
Has the Good News of the Risen Christ transformed us from silent observers to one fully alive in faith? Is our zeal in teaching so impressive that it is enough for a student to simply sit in our class to be healed? Does the Holy Spirit stir in the hearts of our young men simply because they see us? Do they ache to have the joy we feel?
This was made very evident to me recently at a lunch with three graduates and Jim Loweree, their former freshman English teacher. Throughout the meal, each recalled activities or statements which Loweree had made close to thirty years ago. Each spoke about the impact it had and still has on their behavior at work and as husbands/fathers. Taken alone the statements lacked a profound quality. What mattered was the example of teacher whose daily commitment to his vocation touched them profoundly.
Let us lift one another up in prayer that faith and zeal may fuel our every action and encounter this week.
PRAYERS REQUESTED:
• For those in mourning; especially for the family of Reuben Ramos;
• For the repose of Lucy Martinez (aunt of Gary Porras ’90) and the consolation of her family;
• For those in need of healing; especially for Alan Romero ’16; Mrs. Beniquez; and Dan Haggerty ’67;
• In thanksgiving for Alan Romero’s improvement and return;
• For God’s blessings on our Irish Run;
• For our staff and students;
• In thanksgiving for our alumni, friends, and families.
KUDOS and THANKS:

Thank you goes to Jim Loweree ’75 for helping me meet with Houston alumni. Mr. Loweree was a beloved English teacher and role model for a generation of Cathedral alumni.
Kudos to the Development Department for being awarded two Give ‘Em Five! grants from the Price’s Dairies Foundation. These will benefit technology and the formation of a drum line. We want to recognize Irene Pistella’s invaluable assistance with applying for these.
The announcement of Mr. Harper joining the CHS staff and the rally were organized by Mr. Macias. By all accounts, it was a wonderful celebration. Welcome to Mr. Harper and kudos goes to Ray Macias.
