AP Art History

Course Description: The AP Art History course is designed to provide the same instruction and benefits of an introductory college art history course to high school students. In the course students gather an understanding and knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting, photography, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural contexts. Students will connect artworks to specific cultures based on the social, political and economic aspects of the time period in which it was created. Students will also learn to view works of art with sensitivity, intelligence, and with a critical eye. Many colleges and universities offer advanced placement credit to students who have performed successfully on the AP Art History Examination.

Theatre Arts/ Film Studies

Credit:  Semester-long course---1/2 credit

This course provides a study of the art, craft, and business of the theatre and cinema.   Emphasis is placed on the audience’s appreciation of the work of the playwright, director, actor, designer, producer, and critic. This course will cover the different aspects of acting, writing, directing,and stagecraft that make up the theatre world including: stage, screen, and television.

Art I

Credit:  Year-long course---1 credit

A foundation visual arts course in which students utilize the elements and principles of design and composition to explore the materials, techniques, skills, history, and vocabulary of visual design in two and three dimensional form.  Experiences dealing with expression through design, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture are investigated.  Creativity and originality are stressed.  Career possibilities such as graphics, fine arts and commercial design are introduced.  Art appreciation is related to cultural and historical developments, past and present.  Critical analysis of artwork is addressed.

Music Appreciation

Credit:  Semester course---1/2 credit

A general introductory course designed to enhance listening enjoyment and ability.  Emphasis on the elements of music, the characteristic styles of major historical periods, and the lives and works of key composers within the Western musical tradition.  Increases the variety and depth of the student’s interest, knowledge, and involvement in music and related cultural activities. Acquaints the student with traditional and twentieth century American music, emphasizing the relationship music has as an art form with man and society. Increases the student’s awareness of the composers and performers of all eras through listening.No previous musical study required.
